March
29, 2005 So
I leave town, all hell breaks loose at the studios… and now Dawn Hudson
is turning the knife its final turn in the back of independence, spinning IFP/LA
away from the IFP so that the TV show/film festival entity can become more important…
a move likely to destroy both IFP/NY and Dawn's new deal.
But
if a tree dies and no one cares about its roots, does anyone hear it fall?
Anyway...
I'm already is delay mode. The plan for today was to do a comprehensive analysis
of all the studios and where they stand right now. But I have to say, I am sick
to death of all of the dancing... even more so after reading DisneyWar,
which I will review on Thursday.
So...
some sleep... and in the light of the morning, perhaps some inspiration...

A
last note from Bermuda… the producers of the documentary Murderball, a
smash at Sundance (and Bermuda) and due to be released by IFC this spring, are
working to separate the dramatic feature rights to their story. They already have
some interested parties, but I still would argue, as I did in January, that the
really big money from this film will come from a dramatic adaptation with movie
stars who can act in the roles of these real men. So if you want your very own
Oscar movie (good performances in lead and supporting actor will be sure Oscar
nominees and likely winners, sight unseen), better push your way into the line
as soon as possible.

After
being away for last week's screenings, I am finally going to see Sin City this
afternoon... and as much as I am anticipating it with the hope of pleasure, I
deeply fear that it will be a steroidal mish mash of power images and the blur
of the gentle curves of lots of sexy actresses butts and boobs peak-a-booing into
an ubertease.
The
truth is, seeing the trailer for Tony Scott's Domino is even more
disconcerting... since it looks like it may be the film that Sin City was
trying to be. (Plus, the career revival for Jackie Bissett is here... still
hot, hot, hot. Clearly, Jessica Alba can't begin to fil her white t-shirt.)

The
Bewitched Trailer is a bit of a mind bender. They seem to be selling a
Will Ferrell comedy... with the girl sidekick in the form of Oscar winning
hottie, Ms. Kidman.

Word
on the street is that the new thinking on leadership for Disney's non-Weinstein
Miramax is to look within the company, extending the assumption that outsiders
have had that taking this job would mean wearing a saddle to be riden by Nina
Jacobson. Could this be the chance for an aspiring filmmaker from marketing
to step up?
And
notice how quiet the Weinsteins got... that announcement that was coming "as
soon as today"e every day in February and March... don't expect to hear anything
until the boys can also announce their next move. Let's just hope it happens before
September.
