Oh
those Globes…
There
will be endless analysis of what, if anything, the awards means to the upcoming
Oscars in the days to come. Gurus o' Gold will have their day tomorrow and I'm
be kicking in another 20 Weeks To Oscar from the snowy climes of Park City on
Thursday.
With
all due respect to the excitement on Team Brokeback, it was a fairly boring evening.
Most of the fun was in the first hour with Rachel Weisz, Steve Carrell, Hugh
Laurie, and… well, that was about it. The closest thing to a wild and wacky
Globe moment - you know, the kind we are supposed to be tuning in for - was Harrison
Ford handing his cocktail to Virginia Madsen.
Actually, the most
"Globes" moment was actually in the pre-show on E! when Isaac Mizrahi
grabbed Scarlett Johansson's left breast in an effort to figure out
how her dress was holding up the load.
Of
course, this was the karmic inverse of Brokeback Mountain, as here you
have a gay man portraying what a high percentage of straight men have been considering
doing for years now.
Of
course, not many of those guys were fantasizing that the act would make Scarlett
laugh. Rewrite!
Other
moments…
It was great to
see Bob Shaye on his feet congratulating the woman whose The
Long Kiss Goodnight sliced the Achilles Tendons of New Line. It
was also funny to see Rod Lurie get the big hug and not Stephen
Bochco.
There
were a lot of execs getting kissed while it seemed like a lot of the talent that
was not nominated was hidden somewhere far off screen.
Drew
Barrymore needs a hit so she can afford a bra.
Is
there a doctor on TV who shaves anymore? The only clean-shaven nominee for best
actor, TV drama was the guy who is in prison!
It
was an evening of stand-ups and improve guys who delivered great bits. Hugh
Laurie gave a perfect speech, thanking the show's script supervisor, hair
stylist and his agent before getting to the same old, same old. And Steve Carrell
sold a terrific bit "written by his wife, Nancy."
S.
Epatha Merkerson and Felicity Huffman gave the most emotional speechs.
Merkerson, on winning for her first lead role at 53, in Lackawanna Blues.
And Huffman with nothing strong to say, but a great deal of raw emotion in saying
it.
My personal
favorite win was Paradise Now, a powerful, powerful little film from a
filmmaker (Hany Abu-Assad) who turns out to be a really cool, thoughtful
guy who, like is film, seems to have a vision and an interest in humanity far
wider than whatever his personal politics might be.
Ang
Lee was very gracious in his speech.
Was
it just me or did it look like Reese Witherspoon was ready to take a 2x4
to Joaquin's head when he was 2/3rds through his speech without mentioning her.
(He never did.) And did it seem to you like Ryan Philippe was having a
better time than anyone else at that table?
And
that was about it. Can you feel the yawn tonight?
The
after parties were pleasant enough. I finally got to find out just how Philippa
Boyens, who won the "weight off" with collaborator Peter Jackson
is looking these days. "Pretty hot" is the answer. She and Peter and
Fran Walsh all looked slim and happy as they hung out quietly at the Universal
party… though the NY Times' David Carr did get to do the bump with Philippa
for a few moments before he moved on under deadline pressure.
Eric
Bana was very tall.
Thank
GOD that Dick Clark decided not to make another brave appearance.
James
Schamus was as happy as a man can be, as was the lovely Laura Kim,
whose Warner Indie took home two awards on the night... which was two more than
expected.
Terrence
Howard was as charming and good natured as ever, though he seemed about ready
to take a break from the circuit. (That didn't deter him - and other A-listers
- from going to the party at Prince's house after the show. Yes… that Prince.)
Dan
Glickman and his lovely wife made the rounds, still not as flamboyant as Jack
Valenti, but a really thoughtful guy who really seems to delight in discussing
the intricacies of the business as it is and the places it is going. (I don't
think the Glickmans went to Prince's)
Me?
I
need to get to bed by 2 as I prep for Sundance. So on that night… night.
(P.S.
If you want to read about the new cut of The New World, you can check that
out here.)
