It's Friday… it's August… I'm done…

The historic moment that occurred in the last week was not the arrest of Mel Gibson, his verbal diarrhea afterwards, or the question of his forgivability by Hollywood's Jewish community. What we experienced that needs to be noted for the history books is the speed in which we ran from The News to The Analysis to The Jokes.

Anger. Denial. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance.

Anger lasted two days.

The Denial phase lasted less than 6 hours, as Gibson copped to his language and drunk driving in a quick apology.

Bargaining came in the form of the second apology, better tailored to Jews.

Depression only comes when thinking about the first three steps.

Acceptance happened by Tuesday of this week and the jokes followed quickly. If tragedy plus time equals humor, stupidity plus very little time equals humor.

I never remember it happening this fast. And I don't think I am ready to write about it right now. I need to let it sink in. And I need to consider what it really means, for more than a moment.

And so, have a lovely Mel-free weekend. Go see Talladega Nights if you like dumb movies. Go see The Descent if you like really dumb, things-jump-in-the-dark horror movies. Go see Barnyard if you are too young to be reading this right now.

I need the weekend to consider just how hypocritical I might have been this last week. And what the decisions I felt, both the ones I acted on and the ones I did not, meant. Or maybe I'll just go see Little Miss Sunshine again.
